Hamburgers and hotdogs aren’t the only foods you can enjoy around the campfire. Try stepping it up a notch with Dutch Oven Chicken. This chicken isn’t just “finger lickin’”, it’s downright heavenly. If you are a fried chicken lover, pay close attention because we are about to change your life.

What you’ll need:

  • A fire safe Dutch Oven

  • Bone in chicken

  • Large paper bag

  • Vegetable oil

  • Flour

  • Pepper

  • Seasoning salt (we use a combination of Lowry’s and Alpine Touch- Montana’s Special Spice)

  • Brown Sugar

  • And lastly, an open fire

The trick to Dutch Oven Chicken is starting the fire early. It is imperative that there are plenty of hot coals when it comes time to start cooking. You’ll want to feed it for hours before you begin.

While you are preparing the fire, you can also prepare the breading mixture. In your large brown paper bag throw in your flour (we use approximately 5 cups for 20 pieces of chicken). Next you will begin adding the brown sugar, pepper, and seasoning salt to the flour. These ingredients are all ‘to taste’ so do as you wish.

If your fire is close, you can toss your chicken into the brown paper bag. If you are making several pieces, do this incrementally so that your chicken all gets a good coating of flour. Give the bag a series of good shakes. Once your fire is ready you can place your Dutch Oven with the vegetable oil in the coals. Make sure the oven gets real cozy, getting heat up all sides. Once your vegetable oil is rolling, you are ready to put in your chicken. Once the juices run clear, you are ready to enjoy!

Some things to keep in mind: you are dealing with fire and hot oil, so be very careful.  Be sure to keep your oil contained as to not start a grease fire and always use a hook to move your Dutch Oven.

Be safe, have fun and thank us later.
