What a treasure this park is. I know it can get old hearing how much we love living in Wyoming, but when you live here, it is easy to take advantage of or even overlook some of the amazing places we can visit and enjoy. Steve’s cousins, who live here in Wyoming and frequently visit this park, told us we needed to visit Guernsey and we are so glad they did. We were able to explore the entire park, take the trails, and visit all of the park buildings.

The Park

Located just west of Fort Laramie, and just outside of Guernsey, Guernsey State Park is home to 6,000 acres of land and celebrates the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). In 1934, the CCC brought 400 young men to Guernsey to create the features that are iconic to the park.  The CCC was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The buildings throughout the park are made from local quarried stone and hand-hewn timbers. The park surrounds the Guernsey Reservoir and offers visitors recreation on the beaches, hiking trails, rock climbing, biking, water based activities, as well as camping.

The Buildings

Each building is built with the same materials and showcased many of the same details. The massive timbers and roofs create an impressive statement. The stone floors are intricately designed at the quarry, cut in Thermopolis, and were numbered and installed onsite, much like a puzzle. The paneling and doors of the museum are cypress and came from Florida.

The Museum

The museum is located off the main park road. It features a large covered picnic room that stays cool on warm days. Because it is located on a higher elevation you will experience stunning views of the park. Once inside the museum, you find yourself in a large entrance with a telescope to scope out the views directly across the lake. The CCC park designs are part of the displays and there is information about the CCC softball teams, local native history, and even a library. While outdoor activities are the focus of visitors coming to the park, it is worth the trip up to the museum to learn about the park’s history. There are also modern bathrooms.

The Castle

This open air building is made with the same materials, care, and detailing as the museum and other out buildings. The castle has a spiral staircase leading to a tower with fantastic views. Inside are several picnic tables and an inglenook, or fireplace nook with seating. The space allows for approximately 20 people. There is a gravel parking area and a restroom facility. You can reserve this space for special events or book directly here. There is a latrine next door the CCC workers named the Million Dollar Biffy, this is due to the impressive structure taking so long to build.

Great Views

There are great views everywhere. One of our favorites was Brimmer Point. This is off of the main road and you will need to take a trail to access it. The drive up is beautiful; it is a couple of miles of gravel and dirt trails. At the end of the trail is parking space and from there you can walk up to a viewing area. This is where you will find panoramic views.

Trails & Activities

There are 12 miles of restored trails in Guernsey State Park. The trails begin at a kiosk at the Brimmer Point Turnoff. There are also boat ramps for water access. The beach offers visitors a sunny relaxing spot to enjoy the outdoors. The sand is soft and not coarse. There is also horseback riding allowed on the west side of the park. Picnic areas and play structures are also located throughout the park. There are more details for park activities here

Fun Facts

The reservoir has silt runs 1 or 2 times a year for irrigation purposes. This process can take a week or so to drain. Refilling the reservoir only takes about 3 days, according to the park ranger we spoke with. The water irrigates both Wyoming and Nebraska farms and ranches.
