If adventure is what you are looking for, this is the destination for you. You should know what to pack for camping, but here is what you will need for the trail and hike out to Kirwin Mining Town.

What to Bring Hiking

For those of you with ATV’s bring them, this area is perfect for exploring.

Making Camp

Our adventure began months before our actual camping trip when our friends shared their go-to weekend get away. They said it includes four-wheeling, fishing, and camping. After seeing many photos, we finally worked out all of our schedules to make the trip happen.

Passing through Meeteetse, Wyoming we made our way to County Road 4DT, a dirt road that took us past farms, ranches, and finally to a State Forest. Right past the entrance you’ll find several camping spots along the beautiful and scenic Wood River perfect for fishing.

Kirwin Camp Ground

After setting up camp we explored the campground area and checked out the river. The shallow water was perfect for fly fishing and our dog, Coda, who loves playing in the clear cool water.

Off Roading

The next morning we hit the trail, our friends on their four-wheeler and us in our 4-Runner. Unsure what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised the wide trails allowed vehicles to easily pass by. The trail starts heading along a the river on the side of a mountain.

The golden dirt road is an amazing trail that wound through multiple river crossings. When we reached the river rock crossings we checked to ensure it was low enough to provide a safe crossing. Please use caution as river levels change due to snow melt and rain.

Kirwin Abandoned Mining Ghost Town

We continued along the trail winding around the river and mountains and finally, in the distance we saw Kirwin, the abandoned mining town. The views leading toward the town are stunning. From a distance it looked peaceful, nestled amongst trees and grass. An occasional cow relaxing in the tall grass. Upon closer inspection the bones become apparent showing the details to what once was.

The trail ends with a small parking area. Grab your water, camera, flashlight, and bear spray. This is bear country and it is important to follow the safety suggestions provided by the Forest Service. Always be bear aware.

Across the parking area is an overgrown trail that leads to a bridge and finally the road going into Kirwin.

Check it out

This is a short hike. In all, you will maybe go a mile or two at the most whilst exploring the area and walking back to your vehicle. The building are open and you can explore them at your own risk. This is where the flashlight comes in handy. Many of the windows have been boarded up and the buildings are completely dark. All of the buildings are maintained by volunteers.

While we did not get that far on this trip, you can hike further and find Amelia Earhart’s cabin. Construction stopped when she went missing, but the partially built cabin is still there.

Planning

This is an amazing day trip or camping trip. Keep in mind there are less than a dozen camping spots in total. You will need to arrive early. The campground does not allow you to leave your campers unattended overnight, you will receive a ticket.

If you are planning a day trip bring food and toilet paper. There are two places to relieve yourself, at the camp grounds and near the parking area outside of Kirwin.

Let us know if you have any questions! We love this location, it is definitely a hidden gem that we highly recommend.
