The Powell Golf Club

Get out and Play

Written By: Steve Reish

This month we wanted to highlight outdoor sports activities. With that in mind we headed out to Powell Golf Club. Last month I was fortunate enough to go there for a tournament. I had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the course, so wanted to reach out to learn more so I could share it with you.

The details

The Powell Golf Club is open to the public with great prices for 18 or 9 holes. They do offer a membership program which you can see on there website powellgolfclub.org. While on the website be sure and check out The Course. They have some great fly over videos of every hole. If it’s your first time playing this course you will want to watch these videos.

Chatting With The Pro

I spoke with Kury Reynolds, Head Golf Professional, about the course and learned a lot. Including work done to the water feature in 2020.

SR - How would you best describe your golf course?

KR - “A unique blend of desert golf & parkland. The desert 9 (completed in 1999) features holes winding through high desert terrain while the pines 9 (completed in 1948) is narrow and tree lined. Both 9’s feature large, undulating greens. 5 sets of tees make the course playable for golfers of all ages and skill levels”.

The Course of Course

This is what I loved about the Powell Golf Club, it felt like we were playing two different courses. Both are challenging. The signature hole, #4, is a beautiful, but difficult to read par 3. It’s a downhill shot that looks easy enough until you play it. With water on the left and desert in front you need to be accurate. Luckily I had my new Cobalt Q-6 Slope rangefinder with me, which is helpful in situations like this. With the ability to get the yardage you need, with the slope, the Cobalt is a great tool to have in your bag.

After a great front 9 you pull up to #10, a short par 4 which is drivable with accuracy. It truly says hit driver but watch out because it is very narrow with huge trees on the left. The back 9 does call for your driver to be on point with trees on both sides.

SR - Have you added anything new to the course in the last couple of years?

KR - “The course has not had any significant changes in the past 20 years. We did upgrade and overhaul the pond on hole 17 in 2020”.

SR - What are you planning that’s new for this year or next year?

KR - “Major upgrades to maintenance equipment began this year along with a fairway restoration, reseeding program. We are looking at replacing the cart fleet in 2022”.

SR - What events/tournaments do you have coming up?

KR - “In August the Powell American Legion Benefit 7th, Club Championship 14th & 15th, Park County Youth Hockey 21st, Back the Blue law enforcement fundraiser 28th and the Labor Day Weekend Two Person the first weekend of September. The tournament schedule is available on powellgolfclub.org”.

The 19th Hole

Be sure and stop into the bar after your round for a cold drink and a snack. With a great patio overlooking the course you can relax and enjoy the great view while chatting with your buddies about the day’s round.

Overview

I would definitely recommend this course for those who are beginners to those with lower handicaps. I always recommend people playing from the right tees, this will insure a better day out on the course. The golf course was in great shape with lush fairways and the greens held and rolled great. Be sure and fix your ball marks while you’re out there to help keep the course nice for everyone. Book your tee time today and get out before winter!.
