Visit Shell, Wyoming

By: Katelyn Parker

Shell, Wyoming is a place that is near and dear to my heart. I visit frequently because I have family there and every time it comes time to leave, I feel like I am leaving home. Shell has a magical power of drawing you in. The scenery and small-town lifestyle have a way of pulling you away from the mundane, allowing you the opportunity to unplug and reconnect with what truly matters.

Shell sits at the base of the Bighorn Mountains on the East side of Highway 14. The mountain views are overpowering, and Copmans Tomb stands above you in all its grandeur. This little pocket town only inhabits 83 people, but this doesn’t affect the massive amount of charm Shell exudes. The main drag is lined by giant cottonwoods and quaint buildings and the whole thing is drivable in about three seconds.

Where to Stay in Shell- The Shell Campground

When I stay in Shell, if I’m not staying with family, I set up home base at the Shell Campground. The campground features tent and RV sites but this campground sets itself apart by also appealing to those that don’t necessarily want to live rugged. “Campers” have the option to stay in a cabin that has all the amenities of a hotel room, or they can stay the night in one of their glamping tents. The cabins are all seasonal, so my visits are not limited to the warmer weather. The cabins are cozy and welcoming, and the best part is that the campground owner’s hospitality also extends to my dogs. The whole family is welcome.

Where to Eat in Shell-

The Shell Store

Just down the road is the Shell Store, housed in a historic sandstone brick building. The Shell Store, originally the Shell Lodge, was built in 1896. Since its construction the building has served several different purposes, but it currently serves as the towns general store, tap house and local eatery. If you are in the area, don’t miss the chance to dine on some seriously great grub. Whether you choose one of their burgers, chicken sandwiches or salads, you are in for a treat. Speaking of treats, save room for dessert because they also have an in-house pastry chef that concocts delicious treats such as homemade pop tarts, cakes, cookies and so much more. Personal favorites of mine include their macarons, Santa Fe Chicken Salad, and the Mushroom Swiss Burger.

What to Do in Shell

Shell is surrounded by national forest and public lands, so the adventure possibilities are nearly endless. No matter what your outdoor recreational hobby may be, there is something for you in Shell.  Paddle board and swim at Levitt Reservoir, fish Shell Creek, mountain bike the abundance of single track or simply walk the winding dirt roads and soak up the beautiful views.

If you ever need to escape the minutiae and find your center, this is a great place to do it. I love simply walking the unpaved back streets, admiring the old red steepled schoolhouse, the quintessential whitewashed church, the town deer and wild turkeys. The views of the Bighorn Mountains are unparalleled. Do yourself a favor and spend an evening in Shell at the old Shell Store. Sit at a picnic table on the back lawn and sip on a Speed Goat by Ten Sleep Brewery. Sit back and relax as the sun sets on the valley and the evening light ignites Copmans Tomb. It will be an experience you aren’t likely to forget and, be warned, you may find yourself considering relocation.
