Rural Medical Care Cutbacks In Wyoming - Education Now available!

We are putting the call out to all rural medical professionals in Wyoming! Over the weekend we met some amazing new friends and learned a bit more about rural medical care in Wyoming. Did you know Rawlins is the second rural location in Wyoming to eliminate their birthing center in budget cuts this summer? Did you also know, in some cases women, who live more remotely, will have to travel up to four hours to receive neonatal care? Rawlins is also the 19th medical facility in the country to remove its birthing center since 2020. Wyoming's three maternity wards that have closed are Rawlins, Riverton, and Kemmerer.

This gap in care is scary enough with adding travel to labor, but in emergency situations it can be terrifying for the mother. We learned that there is someone doing something about that. Meet Jacqueline George. a registered nurse, doula, yoga instructor, and owner of Matru-Prema Doula Services. Jacqueline specializes in home births and is also a medical professional who, in the course of her career, has brought labor and delivery back to the basics. Jacqueline shared with me that during labor, just like in nature, our bodies perform best when we feel safe and comfortable.

There are 17 home birth midwives licensed in Wyoming (more than half of them live out of state).

Jacqueline continued by sharing "While emergency services are still available in the area, the professionals are not extensively trained in handling births or emergency situations like multiples and or breech births. Also, in order to have a hospital delivery a mother will need to go through Emergency which is expensive or travel to Laramie's birthing center, assuming there is time." The options do not benefit the mother or child.

So, how do we bridge this gap? Jacqueline has, after extensive research, identified one, Dr. Stuart Fischbein who specialized and teaches breech and multiples birth classes. Jacqueline has done all the work and has a two day seminar and class coming to Medicine Bow on September 17-18. For those working in the medical field this education could be life changing for a mother and her child.

Dr. Stuart Fischbein will be offering a two-day seminar in Medicine Bow, Wyoming on breech birth, twin birth, and home birth. The in-person program will include both lecture and hands-on birth simulations. For those who cannot attend in person, he has gladly agreed to stream the lecture portions of the seminar live!
