Camping in the Bighorns

Written By: Sarah Reish

I am always bugging Steve to take me camping or asking when we will go camping next. There are so many amazing locations to camp in Wyoming. From southern to northern Wyoming and eastern to western Wyoming… I have a hard time choosing. I do know, however, that I will never say no to camping the Bighorns. The stunning landscape and expansive space make this an ideal location for outdoor enthusiasts.

Dispersed Camping

While there are campgrounds and designated areas you can camp, one of our favorite parts of going to the Bighorns is the dispersed camping options. We take trails and dirt roads to isolated areas and sometimes even meet up with friends or family to enjoy the great outdoors together. We leave the “roads” and find cool places to set up.

This location is one of my favorites of all time. It is the first place I ever camped in the Bighorns. We met a couple of Steve’s cousins and their families for a fun weekend. We see elk and deer here quite a bit and the area we camped was large enough for 5 big vehicles and tents and campers for all of the groups. Some dispersed area are even large.

Exploring the Bighorns

There is always somewhere to go and explore when dispersed camping. With tons of places right off of the highway to hit,  when we disperse camp we are able to explore some of these cool places. From an abandoned cave someone lived in to stunning views. We explored some of the most jaw dropping locations hidden deep within the Bighorns.

Here are some cool places we have found

  • We drove a ways and then hiked down to an amazing little cave. This space was well hidden and once you climbed down this protected cave offered a place for someone to stay.

  • This was maybe a half mile to mile hike from where we camped and the view floored me. I had never seen a view as stunning as this. It makes you think there may still be places out here that have never been visited by humans before.

  • This fence is mostly buried and intrigued me. Who put it there and why is it here? We used 4wheel drive to get here.

Activities

From hiking to drone flying and hunting or target practice. The isolation of dispersed camping offers the opportunity for some fun activities. We have enjoyed most of the above activities and enjoy them all the more when we are joined by friends and family.

My favorite activity of all is unplugging and really connecting with nature and the outdoors. Life gets so busy, stressful, and sometimes it is the little things like stepping away from the craziness that is most meaningful.

Go Unplug

We love camping and camping in the Bighorns is one of our favorites activities. We encourage you all to take some time to unplug, destress, and relax. Share your camping and or Bighorn adventures with us. Tag us @LiveWYldMag and use #LiveWYld
